I am athletic, up to a point, but I was never going to be an athlete. I was not balanced in a way that would facilitate excelling at any activity. Not that I didn’t try with horse riding (thousands of dollars spent with instructors and clinics because I wanted to be an olympian!), skiing (I just wanted to be expert), tennis (I wanted to be all round consistent and accomplished), windsurfing (I wanted to tack properly without coming off the board) and so on.
I now know that it depended on my balance, not just staying upright because we have all know how to do that, but to balance as our structure is optimally designed is more elusive. Fortunately I learned what it is to do this from my own study and a Feldenkrais Method training.
I no longer aspire to be an olympic horse rider but I ride effortlessly and fearlessly. Nothing intimidates me about horses any longer and they move beautifully. All my horses used to be ‘stiff’ on their left side – then I discovered how stiff I was and amazingly none of them are stiff on their left side any more!
I quit skiing for about 15 years because I became so frustrated with it but now I easily keep up with my pro instructor brother! Bumps and crud used to be very intimidating but now they no longer seem so bad. I can jump cornices and go much faster and not even think about it, skiing is a blast!
Any activity I do today seems easy, effortless and if I take a lesson I improve dramatically which is not how it used to be. My life is transformed in so many ways besides becoming better at athletic activities. Few things in life are scary any more and, in fact, learning new tools, techniques, skills used to feel overwhelming but now I look forward to it. I have recently learned video creation and editing, how to make a DVD, graphics development, website building, SEO tooling, how to market more effectively….you get the idea, nothing is too hard!
